Mechanical Ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR)

MVHR systems significantly improve the energy efficiency of a home and ultimately reduce carbon consumption and footprint. An MVHR system has two separate ducts, one for extracting moist/stale air and one for supplying fresh air from outside. The two ducts are connected to a heat exchanger, which transfers the heat from the outgoing air to the incoming air. The fresh air is then filtered and distributed throughout the building.

Moist, stale air is extracted from “wet” rooms like kitchens, bathrooms, and utility rooms. Instead of wasting that air, a high-efficiency heat exchanger extracts the heat, while simultaneously discarding the stale/wetness through ventilation. The warm fresh air is then transferred to heat habitable rooms such as bedrooms, lounge areas etc.

WHY MIGHT A BUSINESS OR HOME CONSIDER INSTALLING AN MVHR SYSTEM?

  • MVHR can save up to 90% of the heat that would otherwise be lost through ventilation.
  • Significantly reduces carbon footprint.
  • The average family of four produces up to 18 litres of water vapour every day through normal activities such as bathing, cooking, and even breathing.
  • Healthy buildings usually require a full change of air every two hours, when meeting an air permeability level of less than 5m³/m²hr.
  • Indoor air can be up to ten times more polluted than outside air.
  • MVHR units are designed to quietly operate 24×7 by continuously circulating fresh, filtered air through the structure.
  • MVHR combats problems with unwanted moisture, damp, mould, pollutants, and viruses as well as strong smells from pets and cooking.

MVHR FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is MVHR suitable for all buildings?

MVHR is suitable for most buildings, including residential, commercial, and public buildings. However, like with most ventilation systems, it is essential that the property is insulated well.

How much does MVHR cost?

The cost of MVHR varies depending on the size of the building and the complexity of the system. A typical installation for a 3-bedroom house can cost anywhere between £3,000 and £6,000.

Which MVHR system is best?

There are many manufacturers of MVHR systems and the right system is specific to the property. Our preferred manufacturer of MVHR units is GENVEX, and we have specialist knowledge and expertise around installing these systems, as well as installing replacement parts, and ducting.

Does MVHR require maintenance?

Yes, like any other mechanical system, MVHR requires maintenance. The system should be serviced annually to ensure that it is operating efficiently and that the filters are clean.
